I have always enjoyed reading about history and how each nation influences each other. The book is well researched with plenty of references and clearly shows how English Common Law helped shaped West Africa into what it is today.

Chitwood’s book explains how Africa’s traditional legal system was based on age and clan and when exposed to a different way of thinking (the English Common Law), their values changed and this influence resulted in their law reform.

This book explains how one law can influence and shape the laws of another land and raises the old controversy in history: in law reform, whether the law should lead or follow social change. Oftentimes, law reform occurs in response to social change as opposed to causing it; however, while rare, it has been used to expedite social change when current laws inhibit further development. If you are interested in learning more about English Common Law, this book is for you.
